Gov. Chris Gregoire agreed to let a few hundred state employees start working four-day weeks in an experiment to save energy.
Two small agencies will try the Monday-through-Thursday work week. Seven other agencies will try the idea on a smaller scale.
The experiment will involve about 650 state workers who use about 260,000 square feet of building space.
Shortened work weeks save money by reducing electricity consumption, as well as reducing by 20 percent the miles workers commute each week.
Gregoire said the plan could help customer service by leaving state offices open two hours longer on the days they are staffed. I'm sure that will be great news to citizens who always seem to miss the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation during their regular office hours.
